Biography:
Stewart Barney was born in 1869 in Richmond, Virginia. Barney would become quite the Renaissance man as a painter, sculptor, architect and writer. He studied at Columbia, where he graduated in 1890, and in France at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Barney was a Member of the Newport Art Association. One can find a good deal of biographical information on the artist by doing a simple Google search. J. Stewart Barney worked with millionaires and US Presidents in taking on various commissions. One notable project was the artist’s generous contributions to the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, VA.
A listed artist, J. Stewart Barney is in the Who Was Who in American Art, the Davenport’s Art Reference, The Artists Bluebook by Dunbier, the Annual Exhibition Record of the National Academy of Design by Falk, etc. Not to mention AskArt, Artnet, etc. Barney was the author of books including L.P.M.: The End of the Great War. J. Stewart Barney resided in a large townhouse on New York’s Upper East Side, and he was the architect of important buildings such as The Church of the Holy Trinity in NYC.
